This session will provide guidelines how to successfully implement microscopy as a routine diagnostic tool into daily practice. Aspects to consider include proper equipment, time- and cost-effective workflows for sample collection, preparation, and evaluation, good archivation of results for comparison, and last but not least the expertise of the examiner. Based on a collection of microphotographs covering hematology, cytology, histology, and fecal parasitology the audience will train how to gain confidence in sample evaluation from basic knowledge to true expertise.

    Helene Pendl graduated from the veterinary faculty of the Ludwig-Maximilian-University (LMU) in Munich and completed her doctoral thesis on psittacine hematology at the Institute of Avian Diseases of the LMU. After postgraduate trainings in avian medicine in the U.S. and six years as a practitioner in small animal, avian, exotic pet, and laboratory animal medicine, she started her own business on diagnostic microscopy in 2002. Her registered company Pendl Lab exclusively focuses on avian and reptile hematology, cytology, pathology, and histopathology. Besides routine diagnostic workups and scientific collaborations, Pendl Lab provides international training and consulting programs tailored to the specific needs of veterinarians, biologists, and veterinary technicians working in different professional fields. Helene Pendl has published in standard textbooks and journals and has been a regular lecturer and instructor at international conferences and postgraduate programs for more than 25 years.
